Once upon a time, there was a great king…Son of David, king of Israel. He built the First Temple in Jerusalem .He was powerful and blessed by God with unique wisdom. He also had 700 wives and 300 mistresses….His name was King Solomon.
“ וַיְהִי-לוֹ נָשִׁים, שָׂרוֹת שְׁבַע מֵאוֹת, וּפִלַגְשִׁים, שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת; וַיַּטּוּ נָשָׁיו, אֶת-לִבּוֹ.“
“And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.”
The Book of Kings 1 11:3
Apparently King Solomon wasn’t very picky when he chose his women. He married many foreign women: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian and Hittite women.
Our sages glorify King Solomon for his wisdom and great knowledge but also mention that according to the law (can be found in Deuteronomy 17) Solomon committed 3 sins against God: he married multiply foreign women, had many horses and owned lots of gold.
They also claim that his first marriage to Pharaoh’s daughter were the cause to the destruction of the First Temple.
