“And Isaac entreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD let Himself be entreated of him, and Rebecca his wife conceived. And the children struggled together within her; and she said: ‘If it be so, wherefore do I live?’ And she went to inquire of the LORD…” (Genesis 25:21-22)
Most of the women that carried the heroes of the bible had the same attribute and this is the adjective barren. Sara gave birth to Isaac in the age of 90; Rebecca had twins in her belly and only when Isaac was 40 years old and The Lord gave his permission to the birth to come.
Today we will speak about the situation inside, what happened really in the belly of Rebecca according to the sages’ opinion.
Rabbi yochanan said that in the belly there was a war between the twins, bilateral one between Jacob and Esau!
Another rabbi said that when Rebecca walked near to synagogues Jacob kicked and when she walked beside houses with idols Esau kicked.
The sages also took the word “ze” in Hebrew (this) and said that the numeric value of both of them is twelve – this is sign to the twelve tribes to come.
When we look today in ultrasound we can see different pictures, live pictures from the life of the embryo- Rebecca or the author that wrote that story saw the life of one and the death of another!
