The Song of Deborah

In the Book of Judges you can find one of the most beautiful pomes in the Bible: the song of Deborah.

deborah

The song of Deborah is an ancient hymns of praise, that describes the victory of the Jews over the armies of Sisera. There are 31 verses in this song. In the hymns, Deborah praises the Lord and thanks him for this victory. According to the text, God uses the forces of nature to defeat the enemy as mentioned in Judges 5:4-5:

“LORD, when Thou didst go forth out of Seir, when Thou didst march out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, yea, the clouds dropped water. The mountains quaked at the presence of the LORD, even yon Sinai at the presence of the LORD, the God of Israel.”

Although Deborah praises the Lord throughout the hymns, she doesn’t forget the ten thousand soldiers that put their lives on the line to defend the nation against the superior armaments of the armies of Sisera.

Deborah also celebrating the power of women and glorifying Yael for risking her life in order to kill Sisera as mentioned in Judges 5:24:

“Blessed above women shall Jael be, the wife of Heber the Kenite, above women in the tent shall she be blessed”

yael

There is no doubt that Deborah represents the power of women in ancient times. She was a judge, a prophet and was a powerful leader, wise and a brave one.

Can you think about more strong women in the Bible?
