Who was Melchizedek?

There are many speculations regarding the identity of Melchizedek. Who was he?
According to the Old Testament, Melchizedek was the King of Salem and priest of God the Most High, as mentioned in the Book of Genesis 14:18-

“וּמַלְכִּי-צֶדֶק מֶלֶךְ שָׁלֵם , הוֹצִיא לֶחֶם וָיָיִן; וְהוּא כֹהֵן, לְאֵל עֶלְיוֹן.”

“And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine; and he was priest of God the Most High.”

the high priest

There is little said about Melchizedek in the Bible. He is mentioned only twice: in Genesis 14, when he blessed Abraham after the defeat of Chedorlaomer and Abraham gave him tithes from the enemy’s spoils and in Psalm 110:4.
According to Rashi, Melchizedek was Shem, the righteous son of Noah. Abraham was a descendant of Shem. Shem, like Melchizedek, was also known as” the great high priest”.

In the Second Book of Enoch, the Exaltation of Melchizedek tells how Melchizedek was born of a virgin. His mother died during his birth. According to to the book, Melchizedek was taken by the archangel Gabriel to the Garden of Eden.
Other scholars have speculated that Melchizedek is Yeshua (Jesus): Melchizedek was the king of Shalem, which means king of peace. Jesus is also known as the prince of peace. There are other strong parallels between Melchizedek and Jesus: both are Sons of God, priests of the Order of Melchizedek and Kings of Righteousness.
In the Dead Sea Scrolls, Melchizedek influences the demise of the Angel Belial and the wicked spirits in league with him.
Even after we read all these theories, the identity of Melchizedek still remains a great mystery.

  1. José Manuel dos Santos says:

Correct! King of Righteousness, and King of Peace. Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of GOD he remains Priest forever.
Years ago I spent days and nights thinking this over. It kept me busy. I think that HE visited mankind (HIS Image) many times, and in many ways during history.
Proverbs 8: 22 – 31 (31. Rejoicing Myself in the world of HIS whole world, and My joy was with the children of men.)

  2. Raymond D Harock says:

Still the identity of Melchizedek is a mystery. But he has such a great position in Scripture that he was the real succeder of Christ.
