8 things you need to know about Queen Esther

1. Esther’s original name is Hadassah. Hadassah means “myrtle” in Hebrew.

2. “The Book of Esther” is named after her. It is also known as the Megillah, and it is the basis for the Jewish celebration of Purim.

3. Esther’s parents died while she was a young girl and she was raised by her uncle Mordecai as mentioned in the Book of Esther 2:

וַיְהִי אֹמֵן אֶת-הֲדַסָּה, הִיא אֶסְתֵּר בַּת-דֹּדוֹ–כִּי אֵין לָהּ, אָב וָאֵם; וְהַנַּעֲרָה יְפַת-תֹּאַר, וְטוֹבַת מַרְאֶה, וּבְמוֹת אָבִיהָ וְאִמָּהּ, לְקָחָהּ מָרְדֳּכַי לוֹ לְבַת.

” And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter; for she had neither father nor mother, and the maiden was of beautiful form and fair to look on; and when her father and mother were dead, Mordecai took her for his own daughter.”

4. According to our Sages, Esther is one of the seven prophetesses of the Bible, along with Sarah Miriam, Deborah, Chanah, Abigail and Chuldah.

5. The book of Esther is unique. It is the only book of the Bible that does not contain the name of G-d.

6. According to the Megillah, Ahasuerus divorced his first wife, Queen Vashti and began searching for a new queen to take her place. Ahasuerus fell in love with Esther, but he didn’t know that she was a Jew.

7. Haman, who was Ahasuerus’s advisor, hated the Jews and talked King Ahasuerus into getting rid of the kingdom of Jews.

The king agreed but Ester has managed to convince Ahasuerus not to do so and saved all the Jews. A true hero!

8. According to tradition, Esther and Mordecai are buried in Hamedan, Iran.
