The prophet Isaiah is one of the most famous figures in the Old Testament. When we are looking at the beginning of the book, we won’t find a prophet of dedication, as we can find in Jeremiah 1 or in Exodus 3. Isaiah started to work immediately. He didn’t need any convince from The Lord to do his job, no cheering up and no regret, he was practical- his mission was to cause to the salvation of his people, as his name means, and he did it.
The verse that we will discuss today is the first words that came out from Isaiah’s mouth. This verse contains everything, the world that he was living, G-d who created it, the people that he chose and their grade- failed!
If there is verse to memorize by heart- this is the one, as written in Isaiah 1:2-
“שִׁמְעוּ שָׁמַיִם וְהַאֲזִינִי אֶרֶץ כִּי יְהוָה דִּבֵּר בָּנִים גִּדַּלְתִּי וְרוֹמַמְתִּי וְהֵם פָּשְׁעוּ בִי׃”
“Listen, heavens, and give ear, earth! For the LORD has spoken: “Sons I have raised and brought up; but they have rebelled against me.”
This verse shows us in a nut shell the sins of the chosen people in Judah. For me this verse has a universal message- G-d chose us to serve him and not to destroy his and our world!

When I read it the first time, I understood that the water has more functions in the Bible than we know. Usually when we think about water, we can imagine the summer, the ocean, the sun. However, in the Bible water is a sign for belief, a symbol for the power of G-d when he is angry (flood or drought) and also has the significance of knowledge as we can see in Isaiah 11:9. [...]
