If you did a survey about which character suffered the most at the hands of God, the most likely character to come to mind is Job – אִיּוֹב. To lose everything in order to be tested by Satan is not an easy life. As such, today I would like to answer a question from a Webinar participant. Samuel from West Virginia was intrigued two passages from Job that describe God.
The first one is found in Job 9:5-8:
|“It is God who removes the mountains, they know not how ,When He overturns them in His anger; Who shakes the earth out of its place, And its pillars tremble; Who commands the sun not to shine and sets a seal upon the stars; Who alone stretches out the heavens and tramples down the waves of the sea.”||
In this passage we can see God as powerful, mighty, and some may say, aggressive. All of God’s actions here are epic and forceful. We can actually feel this God in our hearts; God is tangible. We can see that all of nature is in God’s control. If any element in nature thought that it could contend with God, the answer is of course, no.
If you read Job 28, God’s command over nature is different. There’s another factor that is added to this picture – wisdom. God controls nature in wisdom, not with power. The same God is revealed to us in Job 28 as a wise God; still tangible, but in this instance God seems much calmer (See Job 28:23-26).
The wisdom for us, by the way, is also described in the last verse of this chapter:
|“And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom ;and to depart from evil is understanding.”||
